Steve Harmison has told talkSPORT an Ashes whitewash is ‘looking likely’ after Australia quickly wrapped up on day five of the second Test in Adelaide.
Captain Joe Root’s determined half-century on the penultimate day had given England hope of an unlikely fightback as they faced a national-record chase.
But those hopes were quickly erased as Australia took six wickets in under one season to go 2-0 up in the series with a 120-run victory.
DAY FIVE REPORT: The Ashes – England hope quickly extinguished as Australia storm into 2-0 series lead
Harmison was a winner of two Ashes series’ but was also part of the England squad that suffered the first Ashes whitewash defeat in over eighty years when they lost 5-0 Down Under in 2006/07.
And, asked if it’s looking likely this time around with the Baggy Greens in a seemingly comfortable lead, the former fast bowler said: “Well, it’s not looking good.
“England have shown a little bit of character in this last day and a half, but England have played nine and half says in this Test series and they’ve only won one day.
“If that form continues then I think 5-0 is looking likely.
“There are batting deficiencies in this Australia team and if England can get on top of them, they’ve got a sniff.
“But, if they can only score 250 runs, they’ve got no chance.”
